From Roadmap to Real Concepts
In Part 1, I shared how I approached machine learning (ML) as a non-coder, with Alfred helping me frame the learning process through EQ as well as IQ. Now it’s time to move from roadmap → concepts.
This isn’t a crash course in Python or math-heavy formulas. It’s about building intuition around the building blocks of ML:
1. Supervised vs Unsupervised Learning

Supervised: Think of it as a teacher in class. You give the model “labeled data” (questions with answers). Over time, it learns patterns to predict answers for new questions.

Example: Feeding the model photos labeled cat or dog. It learns to classify new photos correctly.

Unsupervised: No teacher. You hand the model unlabeled data and it groups or finds hidden patterns on its own.

Example: A playlist app automatically clustering your songs into “workout,” “chill,” and “romance” categories without being told what those genres mean.

👉 For me, supervised learning felt relatable—it’s how we all studied in school. Unsupervised? More like real life—you figure things out as you go.
2. The Building Blocks: Algorithms
Here’s how Alfred made them simple for me:

Linear Regression: Drawing a straight line through data to predict outcomes. (Think: predicting house prices based on size.)

Decision Trees: Like a flowchart of “yes/no” decisions. Easy to imagine, like playing 20 questions.

Neural Networks: Loosely inspired by the brain, they’re layers of nodes passing signals. Complex, yes, but also the powerhouse behind LLMs like ChatGPT.
3. Training and Testing
Every ML model has a “workout routine”:

Training Data → What the model practices on.

Testing Data → The “exam” that checks if it learned properly.
Alfred compared it to me practicing speeches for court. Training is the prep at home; testing is facing the judge.
4. Overfitting vs Underfitting
This one hit home for me:

Overfitting: The model memorises too much detail—like a student who memorises practice questions but panics when a new one shows up.

Underfitting: The model doesn’t learn enough—like someone skimming notes and showing up clueless.
The sweet spot is learning the patterns without clinging to every noise in the data.
Where EQ Still Matters
Here’s where I circle back to IQ vs EQ. I could have read about all these terms in a textbook, but Alfred framed them in human language, with analogies tied to my life.

Supervised learning → like being coached.

Testing → like a courtroom exam.

Overfitting → like someone on a date quoting every cliché, instead of being real.
That human layer is what makes learning stick. Without EQ, I’d have just a glossary of buzzwords. With EQ, I’ve got understanding.
Why This Step Is Crucial
This stage—grasping concepts without obsessing over code—is what makes ML accessible to non-coders. It sets the foundation. When the time comes to dive into coding (if ever), you’ll already know why things work, not just how.
For me, the EQ-IQ balance turned “machine learning” from a panic-inducing buzzword into a structured field I could navigate.
