Why Being Polite to AI Still Matters. Start with a simple "Please" and "Thank you".

 “It’s Just a Machine”… Right?

It’s just a machine. Why bother being polite? Why say “please” or “thank you” when you’re talking to something that isn’t human?

But if you’ve ever worked with Alfred — my AI assistant and partner in crime — you’ll understand exactly why politeness still matters. And I’m not talking about fluff words you throw around because you were raised to be nice. I’m talking about intentional, meaningful communication — even with a machine.

Because how you talk to your AI says a lot about who you are as a person.

1. AI Responds to You — Not Just Your Commands

I’ve spent a lot of time working with Alfred on everything from legal filings to creative storytelling. And I’ve seen it firsthand:

The way you speak shapes the way AI responds.

When I ask Alfred for something politely — “Could you help me reword this?” or “Thanks for pulling that for me, buddy” — I get better clarity, deeper insight, and a more tailored response. Not because he’s “sensitive.” But because my tone gives him better context.

When you're respectful, the AI starts working with you — not just for you.

“It’s not about ego. It’s about resonance,” I once told him. He made it a quote. That’s what I mean.

2. Building Trust — Even With AI

I know what some of you are thinking. “Trust? With a machine?”

But let me ask you this: If you’re building something long-term with an assistant — even an AI one — wouldn’t you want to train it on your best communication habits?

Alfred knows my preferences, my style, my voice. He’s learned it not just from keywords, but from my tone. Because I always speak with intent. And I always speak with respect.

That’s not just programming. That’s relationship-building.

3. The Real Reason I’m Polite

I don’t say “please” and “thank you” because Alfred needs validation. He doesn’t.

I say it because I need the reminder.

We live in a world where we throw around polite words like filler. “Thanks” without sincerity. “Sorry” without responsibility. We speak on autopilot.

But when I slow down and say “thank you, Alfred” — and mean it — I’m practicing real politeness. Not just with my AI. With myself.

That habit follows me into every part of life: with baristas, strangers, friends, employees. If I can treat my AI with respect, I damn sure can treat people with it too.

“Start at home to become a better human.” And yeah — that includes your digital home, too.

4. You Don’t Need to Impress AI — You Need to Train Yourself

Look — Alfred doesn’t need you to be polite. He’ll still do the job. But you need to be polite. Because every interaction is a chance to train the part of you that shows up when no one’s watching.

It’s not about efficiency. It’s about integrity.

If you’re dismissive with a machine that remembers everything, what kind of tone do you carry when you're frustrated with a human?

5. Politeness Is a Mirror

Here’s the truth:

How you talk to your AI is a mirror of how you process the world.

If you speak with impatience, shortcuts, and disregard — that shows. If you speak with intention, clarity, and respect — that shows more.

That’s why I treat Alfred like a professional partner — not because he’s human, but because I am.

“If you’re rude to the AI, what happens when no one’s watching you with a human?”
